About 1640 or perhaps slightly later, Everleigh passed to Sir John Evelyn of Godstone in Surrey, and West Dean in Wiltshire. West Dean was his principal residence where he died and was buried. In the old church there, are the effigies of himself and his wife, in the costume of the period and kneeling in prayer.
Their son was one of the Members of Parliament for Ludgershall, having a claim to the seat (in those days) as being Lord of the Manor of the neighbouring parish of Everley. John Evelyn, the famous diarist, was also connected with the family, and in the well-known Diary he records a meeting with "Sir John of Wilts" as he terms him, at Godstone.

When Everleigh finally passed from the Evelyns is a little doubtful but they were in possession up to 1670, and probably for some years after.

The next owner was Sir Robert Barker, of Irish ancestry, who seems to have been, locally at any rate, a somewhat undistinguished sort of man. As far as can be ascertained he appears to have made no lasting impressions or left any permanent local monuments behind him. Perhaps he was an absentee landlord, who did good work in other and wider fields.
