GOV.UK : Be Ready Campaign

A little preparation, a little peace of mind

Where’s the torch? Is the phone charged? Have we got something for dinner that doesn’t need cooking?

These are familiar questions when the electricity goes off. Having a few essentials handy can make those moments easier, and that’s a useful way to approach the Government’s Be Ready campaign.

The campaign encourages households to prepare for three days, or 72 hours, of disruption. Its practical advice includes keeping drinking water, suitable food and everyday essentials at home, building up supplies gradually as budgets allow.

Read the Be Ready guidance.

Although the wider conversation about national preparedness can sound unsettling, getting started can be a straightforward household task. Think of it like checking the car before a long journey: a little attention now can save inconvenience later.

Start with what you already have

Before buying anything, take a look in your cupboards. You may already have useful supplies tucked away. Gather the essentials somewhere easy to find, and make sure everyone at home knows where they are.

A few things to consider include:

  • Drinking water and long-life food you enjoy that can be eaten without cooking.
  • A torch with spare batteries, plus blankets and warm clothes.
  • A charged power bank and a battery or wind-up radio.
  • Toiletries, and any supplies needed by babies or pets.
  • Some cash and important telephone numbers written on paper.

These are among the items on the campaign’s household checklist.

Take it one shopping trip at a time

There’s no need for a big shopping expedition. An extra item when you can afford it is a manageable starting point. Choose food you would normally eat, use it before its expiry date and replace it as part of your usual shopping.

Preparation should fit your household, your storage space and your budget. Even a small start can give you something useful to build on.
