General Overview:
Levels of training on the Plain during the whole of May will be very high as armoured and mechanised sub-units from 1st and 3rd (UK) Divisions prepare for summer exercises in
Canada and other overseas venues.

3 Commando Brigade will be training logistic elements of the Lead Commando Task Force on Ex GREEN DRAGON during the first half of the month together with seven armoured infantry companies in Warrior infantry fighting vehicles and two mechanised infantry companies in Mastiff wheeled armoured vehicles.

The remainder of the month will see three challenger squadrons , an armoured engineer squadron a further four Warrior companies conducting armoured manoeuvre training across the whole Plain.

Other armoured exercises will include the Land Warfare Centre Armoured and Armoured Infantry Tactics Division Ex COMBAT TEAM and the Armoured Cavalry
Reconnaissance course Ex BADGERS HOLE.

The Royal School of Artillery will be rehearsing an Artillery Review in the last week of the month.

Finally Salisbury Plain will host a Mortar Company from the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps live firing on the Larkhill Impact Area throughout the month.

Late firing on Larkhill/Westdown Danger Area: 5th , 7th , 9th, 10th, 13th, 14th, 19th, 21st , 26th, 28th May 2015
AS90 Firing from Tilshead, Chitterne, Shrewton triangle: Nil
Non-firing days on Larkhill/Westdown Danger Area: 2nd, 3rd,16th , 17th, 23rd, 24

Upcoming Major Exercises. During exercises access may be restricted on Larkhill Ranges and in the Chitterne – Shrewton – Tilshead Triangle north of the B390.


Access to SPTA is regulated by Salisbury Plain Military Lands, Bulford, Larkhill and Imber Range Byelaws. Always comply with local signs and flags. Rights of way in Range Danger Areas are closed when red flags are flying.

The public are excluded except when the roads are specifically opened. Planned open dates for 2014 are as follows:

1. Even when roads are open the village and buildings remain out of bounds to the public.
2. Dates may change if operational training needs dictate.

Health and Safety reminder for all Military Training Areas and Ranges:

  • Do not touch or tamper with Military debris.
  • Wash your hands before you eat.
